Beauty Boosting, Hormone Balancing, High Protein Berry Smoothie

I’ve been addicted to smoothies in the morning recently. It’s something light, nourishing yet filling enough to get me through til lunch, however, sometimes the issue I have with smoothies is how it affects my blood sugar. When I was still learning about health and nutrition and was going through a lot of personal health concerns, I saw a registered dietician who reviewed my weekly diet. She noticed I was having a fruit smoothie every day and it could have been the potential cause to my hormone imbalance.

If I remember correctly, my smoothies at the time probably had about 3-4 different fruits in it with maybe the occasional protein powder and some nut butter. I was still new to superfood powders so I don’t think I was adding much, if anything at all. So I had to go off smoothies for a while to re-balance my blood sugar levels and now knowing what I do about superfoods, hormone balancing and blood sugar, I can confidently make smoothies again with more integrated knowledge on what to use for my body’s specific needs - hence this recipe! It’s super easy and maybe not worth the long paragraphs beforehand, but I felt a preface was due for this one!

Ingredients:

  • 1 Banana

  • 1/2-1 cup frozen berries

  • 1 scoop Sunwarrior vegan vanilla protein with MCTs

  • 1 tbsp maca powder

  • 1 tbsp Hydrid Herbs “Mind Blend” mushroom powder

  • 1 tsp almond butter/peanut butter or nut butter of choice

  • 1:1 almond milk and water

Ingredient Highlight

Maca Powder : Maca root is high in iron, vitamin c and copper. It’s considered a “mood booster” because of it’s hormone balancing properties and is really beneficial for the brain. Maca helps balance hormones in men and women, so if you are struggling with hormone imbalance I highly suggest adding this to your smoothies. It has a really nice yet subtle nutty flavour.

Hybrid Herbs Mushroom “Mind Blend” : This blend has Reishi, Lions Mane and Tremella which have been shown to be really beneficial to the female reproductive system. Reishi and Tremella in particular are seen as “female” mushrooms and Lion's Mane really feeds the brain with nutrients for optimal function. Reishi is good for calming the body while tremella has a lot of nutrients that benefit the skin - hence being part of this beauty boosting recipe :)

Sunwarrior Warrior Blend Protein : I simply love this protein as it ticks off all the right boxes: no added sugar, clean plant-based protein, superfood blend and it contains MCT’s which is a healthy fat extract from coconuts that benefit the skin and hormones as well. One of the keys to health hormones is including different varieties of healthy fats in the diet and this powder includes protein (also beneficial) and healthy fats. Bonus.
